That is the view of former Everton striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the vacant position at St. James’ Park.
The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope revealed on October 22nd he expects Martinez, Unai Emery or Lucien Favre to emerge as a top contender this week.
According to reliable journalist Christian Falk today, ex-Borussia Dortmund boss Favre is the new frontrunner for the job.
However, Campbell suggested Martinez, who is currently in charge of Belgium, would be a better choice.
“I think Martinez be a great fit because he plays attractive football,” he told Football Insider. “That is one thing he does.
“He has a good knowledge of the game, he’s articulate and he will have great contacts from his time as an international manager.
“He’s never had deep pockets before but I think he could assemble a great team. His time in international football will have expanded his vast knowledge.
“I don’t think Martinez is a bad shout, to be honest. Yes, he was relegated with Wigan but he also won an FA Cup. That is an incredibly hard job.
“His credentials stack up for me. The Toon Army want a manager who plays expansive football and let me tell you, Martinez teams have a go.”
