Five Newcastle signings needed as £100m January signing spree tipped – pundit

Newcastle will have to spend £100million in January if they want to stay in the Premier League.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims the Magpies’ desperately need to overhaul their defence.

Newcastle are now one of the richest clubs in world football after the Saudi-led takeover was approved over the international break.

However, The Telegraph claim the new owners will only look to spend around £50million in January.

On this week’s edition of Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher claimed Newcastle have “a championship defence”.

McAvennie agrees and told Newcastle to double that budget and overhaul their poor defence after another loss in the league.

“They need to spend more than that just to keep the club in the division,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I don’t care what anyone says, staying in the league is the objective. They need to double that £50million.

“One of the pundits said Newcastle have a Championship defence and I have to agree.

“They are going down as it stands, so they need at least five players in January.

“Obviously, they need a decent manager too. But I don’t see where their first win is coming from.

“There are big concerns there for me. Overhaul the defence, get another striker and a midfielder in.

“That’s at the absolute minimum. They will struggle against Palace and they haven’t got a chance against Chelsea.

“So that will be 11 games without a win. After that, any other side is down.

“They are so lucky they were taken over.”
