“Why do we always get the worst” – These Newcastle fans react as PL debut confirmed for Saturday

A few Newcastle United fans have been reacting on social media, after it was confirmed that Tim Robinson will make his Premier League debut when he referees our trip to Burnley on Saturday.

Robinson has spent the majority of his career officiating Championship fixtures, and has overseen 12 FA Cup and 12 EFL Cup matches since first holding the whistle in a National League clash between Ebbsfleet United and York City in August 2011.

The West Sussex resident has officiated two Carabao Cup ties this season, including our Second Round loss at home to Leicester City on penalties in August, when Matt Ritchie sustained the ankle injury under a ‘horror’ challenge by Hamza Choudhury that has ruled the midfielder out of action ever since.

Robinson also officiated Sunderland’s 1-0 Third Round win at Premier League Sheffield United in September, plus 12 Championship fixtures this season, most recently Birmingham City’s 3-2 win away to Reading on December 7.

Only once this term has the official not shown a booking, having not reached into his pocket during West Bromwich Albion’s 4-2 win at home to Huddersfield Town in September.

Robinson has issued five cautions in a single game three times across all competitions this season, along with six in one, four in two and three in one.

He also sent Harry Arter off for two yellow cards in two minutes when he issued five during Cardiff City’s draw with Fulham in August. Robinson has not yet issued a straight red card this term, but has awarded three penalty kicks.

Assistants Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn will join Robinson at Turf Moor on Saturday alongside fourth official Anthony Taylor, while Kevin Friend will be the VAR aided by Matthew Wilks.
