Tony Cascarino has included Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka in his Premier League team of the week, as per The Times.
The Magpies left it late to snatch a 2-1 win over Southampton on Sunday afternoon, and had the 6’2″ stopper to thank for keeping them in the match prior to half time.
The result moves Steve Bruce’s side up to 10th in the table, and puts them in the top half for the first time this season.
It’s been said a thousand times, but it really doesn’t bear thinking about where Newcastle United might be without Martin Dubravka in net. The 30-year-old has been nothing short of revelatory since he arrived in January 2018, and he proved once again on Sunday why he is so important to this side. His average of 3.8 saves per game, as per Whoscored, is impressive enough, but it’s the quality of those stops that are really catching the eye. At the moment, it feels as if there are several occasions every week when he is making interventions that are having genuine positive effects on the Toon Army’s results. United are slowly climbing the Premier League table, and they will be hoping that they don’t get sucked back into a relegation battle as the term progresses, but right now, there are games when all three points are being wrapped up by the man between the sticks, and if the Magpies are to have a comfortable season, he will be largely to thank for that.
