Newcastle Target ‘Will Not Object’ To Move To ‘Big Club’

Newcastle were linked with Lille striker Victor Osimhen last month through local reports. The 20-year-old has already tallied 9 goals in 17 appearances, including 2 Champions League goals.

He just joined Lille this summer from Belgian side Charleroi, where he was on loan last season. He joined Charleroi permanently in July when they activated a £3m buy out clause from Wolfsburg. They then made a quick £8m profit by selling him to Lille in August.

Lille could look to make a profit of a similar percentage if the reports of interest in Osimhen are correct. He is reportedly being tracked by the Bayern Munich and AC Milan, as well as Newcastle.

It has been a surreal rise for the Nigerian international who couldn’t make the Wolfsburg side a little over a year ago and is now being linked to clubs like Bayern Munich.

The youngster is taking it all in stride, though. Speaking ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualification, Osimhen made this statement to LOSC – Mercato about the sudden rise of interest in his services:

“I’ve always been ready to take the stage. If big clubs look at me, it’s great for me. But I am well in Lille. The club will decide if I stay or leave. I will not object.”

This is a diplomatic stance for the striker who will turn just 21 next month. He seems to be enjoying his time in the North of France and is currently playing in the Champions League.

Whether he would consider Newcastle to be a ‘big club’ is not certain though a move to Bayern Munich or AC Milan could actually prove to be detrimental to his development as he’s not likely to feature as often as he does at Lille.

Osimhen also recently told L’Equipe that it was his dream to play in Spain. So maybe he will wait to see if a club from La Liga becomes interested in him.

We think Newcastle may have initially held a genuine interest in the striker but he has likely progressed beyond our current reach. The fee he would command would be too high and he’s still an unproven commodity at just such a young age.

He looks a very good player but when the likes of Bayern Munich are sniffing about, it’s unlikely Newcastle will be able to compete.
