Newcastle Youngster Gets Well Deserved England Call-Up

Newcastle’s 19-year-old midfielder Matty Longstaff has been called up to Paul Simpson’s Under-20 England squad. This is Matty’s first international call-up.

This is what Matty had to say about this latest accomplishment in his young career:

“It’s great to be called up – obviously I haven’t had the privilege yet of going away with them, so I’m looking forward to it.

“Every World Cup, you watch England and you sit in the bars that are full of the fans, but this will be my first time away with them so hopefully it’s good.

“When you play in the Premier League, you’re on show to everyone and thankfully for me, that’s helped me get into the England set up.”

The England U-20 team will face Portugal next Thursday. The squad also contains former-Magpie Lewis Gibson, who left for Everton in 2017 as well as Derby’s Jayden Bogle, who was linked to Newcastle this summer.

Paul Simpson was a member of Steve McClaren’s staff at Newcastle during the 2015-16 season. He has been the manager of the U-20 squad since 2017.

This is another milestone in what has been a season of milestones for the youngster. We are thrilled to see Matty get this chance in the England set-up.

While he’s not quite reached the Under-21 level under Aidy Boothroyd, this is a good first step for Matty. The England Under-21s have a load of midfield talent at the moment, so he may have to wait a bit before he progresses to the next level for England.
