BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson has given his predictions for this weekend’s Premier League fixtures. We are a little taken aback that Lawrenson pegs Newcastle for an 0-2 loss to Bournemouth at St James Park.
Here is the 62-year-old former Liverpool defender’s prediction for the match:
Bournemouth got a really good result against Manchester United last weekend, and I have them down as quite a streaky team – in that they tend to have bursts of good form.
The Cherries have also kept three clean sheets in a row now, which is important for them because I would always back them to score.
The same cannot be said for Newcastle. The Magpies played well when they beat West Ham, but I don’t see them building on that result.
We have to disagree with Mark on his backing Bournemouth to score comment. Based on recent form, Newcastle have scored 5 goals over the past four games while Bournemouth have just the one they scored last week against Manchester United.
While Bournemouth have kept the three straight clean sheets, Newcastle’s defense has been solid over the past month since the Leicester City defeat.
We do agree that Bournemouth have had an auspicious start to this season with their 16 points placing them in 7th in the table. They also have accumulated 7 of those points away from home.
However, these are the fixtures that Newcastle need to win. While they haven’t thus far against the likes of Brighton or Watford, last week’s triumph at West Ham showed indications that Newcastle could be headed for smoother waters.
We believe they can put it together for a second week running and get consecutive victories for the first time this season.
Lawrenson was up against the excellent actor Stephen Graham in the predictions this week. Graham has Newcastle winning 2-1. We think we’ll go with the actor on this one.
