Newcastle Tie Down Local Defender On New 3-Year Deal

Kelland Watts has just signed a new three-year contract with Newcastle United. The versatile defender just turned 20 last week, and his old contract was due to expire this summer.

Watts is currently on a year-long loan at Stevenage in League 2. Kelland has had a very prosperous loan spell thus far, starting 13 games in the league with a total of 18 appearances overall.

One of the attributes to emerge at Stevenage is the versatility of the youngster. He was mainly deployed as a center-back last season at Newcastle, though he did play in the midfield on occasion.

This season Kelland has seen time in central midfield, right-back, and even as a left-sided midfielder. The 6’4″ local lad also started out as a striker at Newcastle before making the transition to the defense a few years ago.

While Kelland has been playing in a variety of positions for Stevenage, his future is most likely at center-back. Right now, he is just getting as much experience as he can in his first taste of senior level football.

This is what the Alnwick-born Watts had to say about signing his new deal for Newcastle:

“Signing my first professional contract was a dream come true – being at the club since I was eight and finally being able to say I was a professional at the club was one of my major targets – and to sign another professional contract for three years, I’m over the moon.

“But I know those years in football can go quick, so I think I’ve got to take every game, every training session, every day as it comes, not look too much into the future, and just give what I’ve got day by day.”

This is excellent news for the youngster who has been one of Newcastle’s few loan lads to get steady game time so far. Now let’s hope they get 19-year-old Matty Longstaff on a new contract as well.
