Dwight Gayle made his 100th Premier League appearance when he came on late at Chelsea a few weeks ago. It was a long time coming for Dwight, whose previous Premier League appearance was in the 3-0 win against Chelsea to close the 2017-18 season.
That game a few years ago also represented Dwight’s last start and goal for Newcastle United. Last season he was, of course, on loan in the Championship at West Brom.
Dwight spent the first few months of this season struggling with a pesky calf injury he suffered in July. He’s just now gotten himself back into a position where he can be selected for a first-team place.
It hasn’t happened just yet for Dwight as he’s only come on as a late-game substitute in the last two matches. However, with Newcastle unable to create many chances or put the ones they do create away, Gayle’s opportunity may come sooner than later.
Speaking to NUFC TV, Gayle is ready to take that chance when it comes:
“Of course, I’ve obviously got to impress him (Bruce) as much as I can in training. He’s taken a liking to me. Hopefully, I can prove my worth by scoring some goals and helping the team.
“We’re perhaps not creating as much chances as we’d like. I’m sure over the next few weeks, we’ll develop stuff on the training ground to help the boys upfront.”
We expect Dwight to get at least thirty minutes at West Ham on Saturday, if not the full start. Andy Carroll also trained today so Steve Bruce has plenty of options in attack
Hopefully, Dwight and Andy can start to bag some goals as we try to climb out of a relegation scrap.
