Jonjo Shelvey is another one of Newcastle’s many players whose contract runs out by the summer of 2021. When Jonjo signed in January of 2015, he signed on a 5 and a half year deal, which will run its course in 2021.
After a solid campaign during Newcastle’s return to the Premier League in the 2017-18 season, it’s been a steady stream of frustrations for Jonjo since then.
Last season due to a thigh injury and the emergence of Sean Longstaff and Isaac Hayden, Shelvey was limited to just 10 Premier League starts.
This season has similarly seen Jonjo in and out of the starting eleven. He started the first two games of the season, but after a poor outing at Norwich City saw Steve Bruce abandon his 3-man midfield, Jonjo was back to the bench behind Sean Longstaff and Isaac Hayden.
Jonjo Shelvey– back in the fold at West Ham?
Jonjo returned to the squad when Sean Longstaff missed the Liverpool and Brighton matches with an ankle injury. Once Sean as back fit, Shelvey was again out of the starting eleven.
He did miss the Leicester City debacle with a knee injury of his own. However, he has seen Matty Longstaff force his way into the squad while Isaac Hayden served his three-match ban due to his red card.
Now Sean Longstaff will face a similar ban as Isaac Hayden returns this week. With Newcastle having so much trouble creating chances and getting quality service to Joelinton, could Jonjo get back into the squad this week?
According to the Chronicle, Steve Bruce is contemplating just that.
The report says that Steve Bruce was unhappy that the team parked the bus in the second half against Watford. Due to this, he is giving strong consideration to bringing Jonjo into the team at West Ham.
This will allow Bruce to play a more attacking brand on Saturday. It will also give Bruce a player in Shelvey who can theoretically provide quality service to Joelinton.
We think it may be a decent option to start with Jonjo and Isaac Hayden in the midfield. Jonjo will be motivated, and Bruce has to try something to get this team firing upfront.
However, Jonjo has not been at his best this season and failed to seize any of the previous chances he was given.
