Newcastle close to Jan deal as they open talks to beat British giants to signing – Transfer Talk

United have opened talks with Queens Park over the potential January signing of teenager , according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claims that the Magpies are closing in on a deal for the 16-year-old midfielder, as they bid to beat British giants Celtic and Rangers to his signature.

A substantial fee is on the verge of being agreed for the young Scot, who starred for his country’s Under-17s against Iceland recently, bagging two assists.

Queens Park are an amateur side and so one of their players wouldn’t normally command a transfer fee, but as Thomson is a youth player Newcastle would have to pay some cash.

OPINION

It seems clear that Thomson is very highly-rated, having represented Scotland’s Under-17s despite not even playing for a fully professional club. He won’t be at Queens Park for long, that’s for sure. Inevitably Celtic and Rangers have taken a look at the youngster and are clearly very interested in him. However, it appears that Newcastle have stolen a march on them and now look set to bring the youngster in come the January transfer window. Obviously he is an addition with the long-term in mind, rather than someone who is going to threaten the first team any time soon. It will likely be a few years until Thomson pulls on a black and white shirt for the first time (provided the expected transfer goes through, of course). But it’s always good to have an eye on the best young talent emerging around the football world, and Newcastle have clearly done that, here. Credit to them for that, if not much else.
