News: Newcastle unlikely to be able to sign £11.7m man from Ligue 1 club

Over the weekend Newcastle United were linked with a move for Victor Osimhen, the 20-year-old Nigerian who has made a stunning start to life in France with LOSC Lille.

Osimhen, who joined Lille last summer for £10.8m, has eight goals in just 12 games for his new side and was named Ligue 1’s Player of the Month recently.

Newcastle’s chief scout Steve Nickson has identified Osimhen as a top target for a side who have scored five goals all season with no team in the Premier League scoring less.

However, the Toon have been dealt a blow with a report emerging from France claiming that Lille will not sell Osimhen in January because of his stunning impact.

It seems they believe he can score even more this season, and it would take an astronomical bid for Lille to sell him.

The Ligue 1 side, though, are not strapped for cash after they convinced Arsenal to part with around £72m for Nicholas Pepe in the last transfer window.

Newcastle will likely keep an eye on the 20-year-old’s progress and reassess in the summer.

Newcastle must find a way to start scoring goals, but they cannot give up on Joelinton – he has had a tough start to his Premier League career, but it is not his fault he is not scoring.

It is not like he is missing chance after chance.

The problem he has is he is feeding off scraps at the moment, and even if Newcastle bought Osimhen in January, it would be a pointless signing if they couldn’t get the ball to him.

The Toon must, therefore, look at ways they can improve their creativity rather than any more strikers.
