Yesterday, there was a report that Newcastle were chasing Lille striker Victor Osimhen for a winter window transfer swoop. The 20-year-old has been in outstanding form for the Ligue 1 club scoring 8 goals in his 12 appearances.
Osimhen just joined Lille for £10.8m this past August so it’s highly unlikely that the French club will allow the Nigerian international to leave in January for anything other than an astronomical fee.
There is a report in Top Mercato that says Lille won’t even let him leave for that this winter.
The report says that Lille are relying on Osimhen for this season but are resigned to being unable to keep him beyond this coming summer. Lille are very short in options up front at the moment. In addition to Osimhen, they only have former-Magpie Loic Remy available at the moment.
19-year-old USA international Timothy Weah suffered a hamstring tear earlier this season that will keep him out of action for some time. Weah had also joined Lille this summer in a move from PSG.
Lille finished second place in Ligue 1 last year so are involved in Champions League football this year putting further stress on an already limited squad.
They have lost their first two matches in the European competition and will find it hard to qualify to the knockout stage. So we are not sure if that will soften their stance on Osimhen or not.
However, it’s looking like Newcastle may have to look elsewhere for a striker this winter.
