Newcastle were linked with Burnley center-back Ben Gibson this past summer. The reports then stated that Newcastle wanted the defender on an initial loan deal with an option to buy.
Gibson moved to Burnley from Middlesborough in a £15m move in 2018. Since then, Gibson has made only 6 appearances at Turf Moor. This season he has failed to make the Burnley squad in four Premier League matches. His only appearance coming in a 1-3 defeat at home to Sunderland in the Carabao Cup.
TEAMtalk, who first reported of Newcastle’s interest in June, are following up those initial reports saying that Newcastle will make a move to get Gibson on loan in January. The supposed deal would feature an option to buy with Burnley willing to take a significant loss on the player.
We don’t see much in these reports as Newcastle are stocked in the center of defense. However, Newcastle do have three center-backs who will be out of contract by the summer of 2021. They are Federico Fernandez (deal expires in 2020), Ciaran Clark, and Fabian Schar. Of those three, only Fabian Schar is likely to be offered a new contract.
Steve Nickson and the scouting team could be looking at potential options to replace 30-year-olds Fernandez and Clark. However, unless they plan on cashing in on them in January, we doubt a new center-back will be brought in this winter.
