Star Defender Talks About His Fight To Get Into Newcastle Team

Last season, Fabian Schar had to bide his time before getting into the Newcastle side. He made his first appearance as a starter against Chelsea in the third game of the season.

However, he did not feature in the league again until November 3rd when he came on at half-time for an injured Jamaal Lascelles.

Schar then slowly became an indispensable member of the squad only not appearing in five games for the rest of the season. Three of those were through yellow card suspensions.

Fabian has continued his run in the side this season starting all of Newcastle’s 9 matches.

He spoke to NUFC TV about the upcoming match at Chelsea but he’s also touched on the fight for places at Newcastle. Something he knows all about from last year.

Newcastle have tweeted the following clip from his interview in which he talks about the Chelsea match.

The next part of the interview deals with the players who came into the side against Manchester United. This is how Fabian responded when asked about no player’s place being guaranteed:

“Definitely we have a big squad and we have a strong squad. You see that all the players are very important for us. So the season is very long and we need all of our players.”

Fabian then went on to talk about his defensive partner Ciaran Clark and the other players who came in against Manchester United:

“Of course, like for Ciaran when he didn’t play before. He then he came in and played a great game. We won and I’m really happy for him that he could show what he can do. And for all the other players who played.

“I’m really happy for the players who did a good job and who didn’t play before.

“It’s not easy when your not playing for a time. I know this also from the start of last season.

“But that’s part of the game. Everybody knows how it works. You still have to keep working and go on.”

The interviewer then asked about the beginning of Schar’s Newcastle career when he featured sparingly for his new club:

“Of course, like I said before, everybody knows the situation. You still have to keep working. Don’t put your head down. When your chance is there, you have to take it. That’s what I did last year.

Everybody wants to play, it’s normal. But in the end only eleven can play in the starting eleven. It’s also a hard decision for the gaffer I think. That’s football.”

Fabian certainly took his chance last year and is continuing to put in the performances for Newcastle.

The big issue right now with the 27-year-old is that he is out of contract in 2021. Newcastle need to get Fabian signed on a new long-term deal.

He is our best player and we need to keep him at Newcastle for the foreseeable future.
