In early June, French outlet L’Equipe had a dubious report out that Newcastle had bid in the region of £17-21m for Mainz forward Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The 6’4″ had been linked to Newcastle the previous summer before joining the Bundesliga side from Lyon for £7m. The bid this summer was reported to have been rejected outright.
Newcastle continued to be linked with the 22-year-old Frenchman throughout the summer. In late July, Mateta’s name resurfaced through a Sky Sports report by Kaveh Solhekol.

However, just a week later, Mateta suffered a severe knee injury and is still some time away from making his return.

There is a report in Sport Witness that Mateta has not ruled out a transfer away from Mainz in January. Sport Witness cites German outlet SportBild as the origin of the claim.
According to reports in the summer, Newcastle were one of eight clubs interested in the French U-21 international. The others were Southampton, Watford, Everton, Brighton, Cardiff City, AS Monaco and Marseille.
With Mateta still being sidelined with his knee injury, we don’t think Newcastle will be making a move for him this winter. His fee is still reportedly in the £30m range, and Newcastle’s interest has likely moved elsewhere.
