Newcastle Close To Tying Down Midfielder But Remain At An Impasse With Star Player

The Daily Mail are reporting that Newcastle will offer Matty Longstaff a new contract in the coming days.

The 19-year-old Geordie’s current deal has him on around £850/week and is due to expire in the summer. The reports states that Matty and Newcastle have been in discussions on a new five year deal with much-improved terms.

The youngster’s heroics against Manchester United has lifted the club over the past few weeks. So this is excellent news if Newcastle can get Matty to commit to his hometown club. We have every reason to believe he will be buzzing to do so.

However, it appears as though the club are not as advanced in talks with Matty’s older brother Sean. The 21-year-old midfielder is tied down until 2022 so time is not as pressing in getting Sean on a new contract as it is with Matty.

Sean and Matty Longstaff– Newcastle’s midfield duo for years to come?

The report says that Newcastle are working on getting Sean to agree to a six-year deal. However, the Mail describe the negotiations as having reached an impasse.

It does not clarify what the sticking point is for Sean. Though with the Manchester United still reportedly interested in a winter move for him, he could be waiting it out to get the best possible deal.

We are not concerned at the moment as Sean does have three years left on his current deal.

As with Matty, we have every reason to believe that Sean will be thrilled to sign an improved contract with Newcastle. The brothers must have felt like they were in a dreamland patrolling the midfield together at St James Park.

Both the club and the brothers will likely want to ensure that will continue into the future.
