Newcastle Linked With 23-Year-Old Turkish Goalkeeper

Newcastle were linked with Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir in a report from Turkish outlet Fotospor last month. That report stated that Newcastle, along with three other European clubs, were tracking the £18m rated 23-year-old.

The other clubs cited were Liverpool, Schalke in the Bundesliga, and Rennes from Ligue 1.

Sport Witness have noted that another Turkish outlet 61 Saat are reporting that Newcastle are still highly interested in Cakir.

Ugurcan Cakir– Are Newcastle tracking 23-year-old?

One issue with this link is that the Turkish goalkeeper has just extended his deal to 2024 a few weeks ago. The club also have a clause in which they can extend the deal an extra year to 2025.

Newcastle have been linked with a couple of goalkeepers recently. They reportedly scouted Benfica’s Odysseas Vlachodimos during a Champions League match last month.

It makes sense that Newcastle will be looking at goalkeepers with both Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot’s contracts due to expire this summer. If neither of them sign extensions, it would leave just Freddie Woodman and 20-year-old Jake Turner behind Martin Dubravka.

While Dubravka is reportedly close to signing an improved deal, we are not sure of the situation with Freddie Woodman, who has excelled on loan at Swansea. His contract is due to expire in 2021.

Cakir joined Trabzonspor from Trabzon 1461 as a 16-year-old in 2012. He has risen through their academy and broke through as their number one last November. He has made 47 total appearances for Trabzonspor with nine clean sheets.

He received his first cap for Turkey in a friendly against Greece this past May. He is in Turkey’s squad for their Euro qualifier against Albania this evening.
