Newcastle Linked With January Move For 22-Year-Old Defender

There was news yesterday that Steve Bruce would shake up his back-line by bringing in Ciaran Clark and dropping Paul Dummett. Due to Clark’s minimal appearances this season, it would be a shock if the 29-year-old was brought out of the dark for today’s game.

The team is well-stocked with players at the central defender position with six players who can do a job there. They have been without Florian Lejeune since April with his knee injury. There is also Federico Fernandez, who has not featured much this season. The 30-year-old’s contract runs out this summer.

While Newcastle have leaked 13 goals this season, they have only managed to score 4. That is level with Watford for the worst in the Premier League. So we would think that Newcastle would be more apt to address the goal-scoring problem this winter.

However, there is an exclusive in the Sun that Steve Bruce is a big admirer of Nottingham Forest’s center-back Joe Worrall. The report claims that Newcastle will try to bring him in on a cut-rate deal in January.

The Sun claims that Worrall’s contract will expire in the summer, thus allowing Newcastle to bring him in on the cheap. However, NottinghamshireLive claim that his contract does not run out until 2022. They say he signed a four-and-a-half-year extension in October of 2017.

Joe Worrall– not really needed at Newcastle this winter

The 6’4″ Nottingham born defender has risen through the ranks at Nottingham Forest. He joined the club in 2011 when he was just 14 years old. He has been out on loan twice in his career. In 2016, he joined League then-League Two club Dag & Red. Last season, he played under Steven Gerrard at Rangers where he made 32 appearances.

Worrall has made 67 appearances for Forest and has been capped at the England U-20 and U-21 level. He has started all 11 games in the Championship this season.

We are not sure of the situation with his contract as has it running out in 2020, but his Wikipedia page mentions that he did sign an extension.

Either way, we don’t think Newcastle will make a move for Worrall this winter. If his contract does, in fact, run out in 2020, we suppose they could try to get him as a free agent to replace Federico Fernandez this summer. We just think having seven players at the position would be a bit too much.

However, this is not the only central defender Newcastle have been linked with recently. The club were reportedly scouting Koray Gunter at Hellas Verona last month. So maybe they are looking at some younger players to bring in for the future. Though we don’t think it will be a priority.
