Dwight Gayle was mentioned during Steve Bruce’s press conference yesterday as facing a late fitness test for Sunday’s match against Manchester United.
Gayle had trained all week with the team after being out since July with a calf injury. The injury was initially thought to be minor. However, it failed to respond to any treatment despite the club sending him to multiple specialists.
Bruce has expounded on his earlier statements about Gayle to BBC Newcastle. It looks like Sunday may be too soon for Dwight to make his return.
“He had a really big week in Portugal with the physios and fitness people… this weekend might be a little bit too close for him. But, he’ll be doing anything he can to be involved.”

It’s probably best to give Gayle the additional two weeks over the international break before making his return.
The break is coming at a good time for the squad as both Matt Ritchie and Florian Lejeune could be back for the match at Chelsea on October 19th. They have both been sorely missed in this team.
It’s encouraging that Bruce is getting the bulk of his squad back for team selection. We hope that will keep the players determined and sharp as they fight for places.
Though, we are uncertain what to expect at the moment after the last few weeks. Sunday’s match could go either way in our opinion.
We wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a reaction with the lads grabbing all three points. It also would not shock us to witness another dismal display. We just don’t know what to expect from this team.
