News: Newcastle delighted to welcome £40,000 per week man back to the squad

Steve Bruce has confirmed that Dwight Gayle is back in full training and could be available for the match on Sunday against Manchester United.

The former Crystal Palace man missed all of pre-season and every game for the Toon this season – as he tried to recover from a mysterious calf injury.

Bruce said only a couple of weeks ago that he had no idea why Gayle wasn’t recovering from his injury.

However, a period of complete rest seems to have worked, and Bruce can add a different option to a strikeforce that has only scored one Premier League goal this season.

Gayle does not have the best record in the Premier League, and in his one full top-flight season with the Toon, he managed to score six goals in 35 appearances.

The 28-year-old struggled to perform as a lone forward under Rafael Benitez – as he simply is not suited to that position in the Premier League.

Bruce has suggested he could play a front two of Joelinton and another. If he were to use this system, then Newcastle may finally see the best of Gayle in the Premier League.

Newcastle now have a fully fit squad to choose from apart from Matt Ritchie, and they have to get a win on Sunday against a Manchester United side who have not won away from home in ten games.

This is the perfect opportunity for Bruce to get his first win over the Red Devils as a manager and move the Toon out of the relegation zone.

The return of Gayle could provide Newcastle with more firepower off the bench.
