View: Newcastle surely set for big boost as £55k-a-wk Leicester dazzler doubt for clash

OPINION

Newcastle United will possibly have been fearing the worst when watching Leicester City go toe-to-toe with Tottenham and pick up all three points on Saturday.

Yes, the Magpies did the same thing only a matter of weeks before, but the Foxes took the game to Spurs, whereas Newcastle stat behind the ball and defended for their lives in that game.

It could have been more for Brendan Rodgers side, who majorly impressed at the King Power Stadium, and sent a message to Newcastle, who travel there on Sunday afternoon.

Steve Bruce’s men could be in for a long afternoon if the same Leicester turn up that did against Tottenham, but they could have been hit with a major blow in the lead up to the game.

Foxes’ assistant manager Chris Davies, as quoted by Leicestershire Live, confirmed on Tuesday that key man James Maddison is set to miss Sunday’s clash – a huge loss for Rodgers’ men.

“Madders, he got a knock on his ankle,” he said.

“He looks a doubt for the weekend. We’ll see how he goes and how he recovers next week.”

The £55,000-a-week dazzler [Spotrac] has been in phenomenal form this season and scored a beautiful long-range strike to seal all three points against Tottenham last time out.

Maddison has already scored against the Magpies in the Carabao Cup second round this season and has been involved in three goals in his six Premier League appearances.

The 22-year-old is Leicester’s biggest threat going forward and has averaged 3.3 shots on goal per game according to WhoScored, and as his goal against Tottenham proved, he is capable of hitting the target from anywhere.

Maddison has also completed 3.5 dribbles in each outing and is a constant thorn in the side of opposing sides – something Newcastle wouldn’t want to face after their poor defensive performance in midfield against Brighton.

Newcastle could need all the help they can get on Sunday, and Maddison being a doubt for the clash is a big boost as they look to earn only their second win of the season.
