Rony Lopes was linked to Newcastle late in the summer and is reportedly still a target. Even though Lopes just joined Sevilla from Monaco for €24m, Newcastle are said to be tracking the 23-year-old.
Sevilla underwent a summer of transformation as they appointed a new manager in Julen Lopetegui and have attempted to replace most of their attackers from last season. This summer Sevilla lost Wissam Ben Yedder, Pablo Sarabia, and Quincy Promes. To replace them they have brought in Rony Lopes, Lucas Ocampos, Oliver Torres, and Luuk De Jong.
The priciest of their summer additions was Rony Lopes who the Shields Gazette are noting may be allowed to leave this winter per reports from Spain.
Though Lopes has played only 11 minutes in the league for Sevilla, we don’t think Sevilla would throw in the towel on such a talented player after just two months. There was a lot of upheaval at Sevilla this summer. The club brought in 15 players on either permanent or loan deals and saw 19 players go in the other direction. Manager Lopetegui is clearly in the initial stages of cementing a first eleven at Sevilla. With 15 new additions, there are going to be some players who aren’t going to feature right away.
One of those has been Rony Lopes whose right wing position is currently taken by Argentinian Lucas Ocampos who joined this summer from Marseille. However, it is not only Lopes who has found it hard to get into the Sevilla side in the first few months of the season. Newcastle were linked to Nemanja Gudelj this summer who eventually joined Sevilla on a free. The Serbian defensive midfielder has only played 63 minutes in La Liga so far.
In addition to Lopes and Gudelj, defender Jules Kounde from Bordeaux and striker Munas Dabbur from RB Salzburg have barely featured. Kounde, like Lopes, cost Sevilla €24m but started only the first game in La Liga and hasn’t been on the pitch since. Dabbur has played 4 minutes in all competitions with Luuk De Jong getting all the starts. Though the former Newcastle striker has not yet scored a goal so Dabbur’s fortunes could soon change.
We are a bit leery about reports that Newcastle will be after Lopes this winter. Sevilla have started well this season to be in fifth place when more than half of the squad are new additions. It just so happens that one of those new additions, Lucas Ocampos, is keeping Lopes out of the team at the moment.
