Ayoze Perez has gotten off to one of his slow starts at Leicester City. While he has started four league games and the Carabao Cup tie at St James Park, Perez has yet to register a goal or an assist for the Foxes.
There are some murmurings online amongst some Leicester City fans and that is most likely due to his high price tag. However, Perez brings an intelligence and awareness to the game that often goes beyond statistics.
Ayoze is still getting comfortable in a different system under Brendan Rodgers, but the manager has maintained his faith in his big summer signing. We fully expect Ayoze to keep his place when Newcastle visit the King Power Stadium this weekend.
One thing that is becoming evident is that Ayoze Perez is a big miss to Newcastle. His strengths have not been replaced as of yet by any of Newcastle’s signings. Perez’s intuitive pressing from the front, guile at finding space and creating space for teammates, along with his anticipation in front of goal have been a massive miss for Newcastle in their first seven games.
Perez also had a knack of scoring critical goals for Newcastle. He had an anticipation in the box that we’ve not seen this season. With the amount of times Miguel Almiron’s shots go straight to the keeper, we can’t help but think Ayoze would have put a few of those deflections in the back of the net.
Newcastle lost more than their leading scorer when Ayoze Perez left for Leicester City, they lost an innate ability on the pitch that goes beyond tactics and effort. They lost a player who created his own luck through anticipation, awareness, intuition, and tireless running. We just hope we don’t see too much of it on Sunday at Leicester City.
