Newcastle were linked with RB Leipzig striker Yussuf Poulsen in the summer of 2018. The Shields Gazette have put out a report noting a claim in the Express that Newcastle still have an interest in the Danish international.
The report in the Express only mentions Newcastle’s interest in passing and as being long-standing. The reference could be due to the links from a few summers ago. The crux of the report in the Express is that Everton are tracking the 6’4″ Dane.
The 25-year-old has most likely progressed beyond Newcastle’s reach as he has become a force in the Bundesliga. He joined RB Leipzig in 2013 from Danish club Lyngby for a little over £1m. His value now would likely eclipse £50m.
Poulsen has formed a lethal partnership with German striker Timo Werner at Leipzig. While Werner is the goal scorer, Poulsen’s play is vital in providing space and chances for his strike partner. Poulsen has already amassed 6 assists this season to go with his 1 goal.
We doubt that Poulsen would swap Champions League football at a resourceful club like RB Leipzig to join Newcastle. He also is not a prolific goal scorer with just 59 goals since joining Leipzig. Since Newcastle have only scored 4 goals in their first 6 matches, they would most likely want to bring in a proven goal scorer for the type of fee Poulsen would command.
