Newcastle released some images of the training session yesterday, and we noticed that Dwight Gayle was involved. He likely has returned to just light training this week though it is still a pleasant surprise to see him making progress.
Football Insider is reporting in an exclusive that Dwight Gayle is set for an early October return. That could mean Gayle will be ready to face Manchester United on October 6th at St James Park.
Gayle has been out of action since a pre-season calf injury in July. Bruce expected Gayle to be available early on; however, the injury has failed to respond to any treatment methods. After being sent to see specialists and still coming away with few answers, Bruce decided to completely shut Gayle down and let him heal naturally.
It seems that may have done the trick though it was a very short period of complete rest for the 28-year-old. However, if this exclusive is true, it will provide Steve Bruce with another option in attack next month. We also expect that Andy Carroll will have made his return by that time as well.
Bruce seems to rate Gayle highly and has said as much since he got to Newcastle. He mentioned early on of his attempts to sign Gayle when Bruce was in the Championship. Just a few weeks ago Bruce said the following about a role for Gayle at Newcastle:
“I see a role for him. The disappointing thing is the injury – he hasn’t kicked a ball yet. There’ll always be interest from the Championship.
“I think I’ve tried to sign him three times. But, since I came in, I’ve told him ‘Dwight, get yourself fit, and you can be part of this going forward’.
We hope Gayle can get back as soon as possible as the injury woes at Newcastle start to clear up. With Matt Ritchie, Allan Saint-Maximin, DeAndre Yedlin, and Florian Lejeune also getting closer to a return, Steve Bruce should soon have a full squad to select from.
