The results for our latest poll has determined that of the five players due to have their contracts expire this summer, Federico Fernandez is the one our readers would most like to get an extension.
This is not really a surprise though we did think that Javier Manquillo being only 25 years-old might pull some votes his way. He did finish second in the poll with 28% of the 655 total votes.
However, Fernandez was the clear leader with 55% of the vote tally. Federico will be 31-years-old when his contract runs out. While he is a top professional and provides vast experience, we think it will be hard for him to get a suitable new contract from the club.
Fernandez is at that age where Newcastle are hesitant to give long-term extensions. Mo Diame, at 31, was only offered a one-year extension and it is unlikely that Federico would get anything much longer.
During the Chronicle’s Q&A with Lee Ryder today, he was asked if the club will offer Matt Ritchie a new contract. This is how Lee responded:
Ritchie hits the last 18 months of his existing deal in January. At 30, his next contract is going to be an important one.
He’ll want a good deal from Newcastle because he knows that there will be interest in him as time goes by and he gets closer to the end of his contract.
Ritchie is a committed player and important in the dressing room, but United have made it clear they’re looking at younger players. It’ll have to be a deal that keeps everybody happy, something Mo Diame found extremely difficult.
We would imagine that Fernandez may get offered a one-year extension similar to Diame. However, we don’t think he would accept that, and we wouldn’t blame him. He’ll most likely get better offers as a free agent.
