Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce is clearly being realistic with his view on how to utilise Andy Carroll this season and that spells good news for all parties.
The Daily Mail reported on Wednesday that the forward was on track to make the bench for the Magpies’ clash with Brighton on Saturday with Bruce set to decided 24 hours before kick-off whether the attacker will be fit enough to feature.
The Daily Star followed on from that report to state that Bruce was not only desperate to unleash Carroll against Brighton as it’s a match his side need to win in order to move away from the drop zone, but they stated how the Magpies boss views the forward.
The national newspaper stated that Bruce is aware that Carroll is unlikely to be a regular starter in the coming months due to his medical history, but at the very least he can be a highly effective impact substitute.
This a realistic view to hold as while the Magpies boss clearly has faith in the 30-year-old to make his job easier, as why else would he be desperate to unleash him, believing that Carroll can be counted on to feature a lot would clearly be a mistake.
Carroll’s injury problems are well documented and cover two pages on Transfermarket and his body simply won’t be able to cope with playing 90 minutes week-in-week out.
The 30-year-old managed to play just 568 minutes of action across 14 outings last season for West Ham as per Transfermarkt, and it’s worth noting he has only managed to play more than 30 times in a single season once out of the last five campaigns.
Carroll is a proven Premier League goalscorer, he has scored 53 times in 211 top-flight outings, and you feel if fit he could boost the Magpies’ firepower.
Newcastle have only managed to score four goals in their opening five league games, no player has scored more than one goal for them (Source: BBC), and it’s a relief that Bruce is likely searching for a way for his attack to score more goals that doesn’t involve Carroll.
As if he views the 30-year-old as not being able to play many games, then surely he has another trick up his sleeve ready to go?
