Neil Redfearn was thrilled with the Under-23s performance last night. The lads were able to pull out a 3-2 victory with a Thomas Allan goal in the 73rd minute. It was Allan’s third goal of the young season.
Speaking to the official Newcastle website, Neil Redfearn was full of praise for the youngsters. He also pointed out some of the lads who were standouts last night:
“I thought it was a great game of football and there was a good tempo to it. We’ve talked through recent weeks about being more front foot and more aggressive in what we did.
“We pressed higher up the pitch which I thought suited us and I thought the two central midfielders (Jack Young and Mo Sangare) were outstanding because of their energy and aggression. They played off the front foot and the feel-good that’s come out of it is really good.
“We’ve got to bottle that up now and take that into the next game and I think how we did it suited the majority. Tom Allan and Rosaire (Longelo) in wide areas gave us a real threat. Luke Charman was a presence down the middle and Yannick (Touré) looked bright.
Luke Charman was able to score in his second straight game after his long-range blast against Macclesfield in the EFL Trophy match a few weeks ago.
Rosaire Longelo also scored a goal from the edge of the penalty area to give Newcastle the initial 1-0 lead.
Striker Yannick Toure has been a bit quiet so far this season so it’s positive to see that he could be picking up his performances a bit.
Mo Sangare– back from international duty
Of course, Liberian international Mo Sangare was full of confidence after featuring in both of his country’s World Cup Qualifying matches over the break.
Midfielder Jack Young, who was featured before the game on the club’s website, was also heralded by his manager.
Neil did not only give the plaudits to the attackers as he also spoke about the defenders and their solid display despite giving up two goals:
“The back four did really well as Norwich are a really good side and when they got around our box, they were very bright. However, we were very diligent and stuck with it.
“When it got to 2-2, they could have got another, but we showed resilience which we are looking for so I’m very pleased.
“All the goals were good and the boys can be very proud of themselves tonight.”
It was an excellent performance by the youngsters last night as they have rebounded from their three opening losses with two straight victories.
