News: 28-year-old has nothing but kind words for Newcastle

Georginio Wijnaldum has admitted that he “Had the time of his life” in Newcastle.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official club channel after his sides 3-1 win over the Toon the Dutchman had nothing but good things to say about Newcastle.

Wijnaldum was brought to the Premier League in 2015 by Steve McClaren, then manager of the Toon, for around £14.5m from PSV Eindhoven.

The 28-year-old was a success on Tyneside scoring 11 goals in 40 appearances, but he could not save Newcastle from relegation, and he departed the club for £25m.

Liverpool acquired his services, and he has not looked back winning the Champions League last season against former Newcastle teammate Moussa Sissoko.

Wijnaldum though spoke positively about Newcastle and claimed that even though they were relegated, he has a lot to thank the club for and that if he had not joined them, he would not have ended up at Liverpool.

The travelling fans gave the Dutchman a warm reception at Anfield, and I think deservedly so, Wijnaldum was one of the only players in that side who tried to save us from relegation.

He did not sulk or complain he got on with his job and I don’t think many Toon fans will resent him for joining Liverpool.
