Jamaal Lascelles put in a reliable performance against Liverpool, but the Reds proved to be just too good in the end. The big man at the back made some crucial clearances that helped keep the game close.
Jamaal spoke after the match and was happy with aspects of the performance. He did bemoan some of the errors, however considering the opposition, it was a decent performance overall.
Lascelles knows that next weekend is a different animal, so to speak. Brighton is a massive opportunity for three points and one that the lads shouldn’t let slip away.
This is what Jamaal said to the official Newcastle website after the game.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game. Liverpool are a good side, and we started off really well. Unfortunately, we let them back into the game but, overall, we shouldn’t let our heads drop as they’re a really strong side.
“The game plan was going very well, and we started off brightly. We thought if we defend well, we can do well against them, but even if it’s a lack of concentration for a second, these teams can hurt you.
“It was a great goal from Jetro, and I thought we came out of the blocks really sharp. It was just a shame that we couldn’t hold onto the lead, but we’ll look back at the videos and how we could have stopped the goals.
“There were a few mistakes in there, but sometimes you have to respect the other team as they are Champions League winners.
“There are positives to take from the first half in particular, and we need to make sure we don’t let our heads drop. We have a big game against Brighton coming up, and it’s a one we need to be getting three points from so that’s what we’ll be looking to do.”
Jamaal reiterated some of his points from his interview on Twitter.

This week is a massive game at home to Brighton who are placed just one place above Newcastle in the table. This is a key week for this club. Failing to get the full three points on Saturday will be a step backward for Steve Bruce.
It is also an important week for a few of our players who will be assessed as to their availability for Saturday. Andy Carroll could make his return to St James Park if all goes well during training this week.
Sean Longstaff missed out at Liverpool due to his ankle injury, and Steve Bruce has been unable to give an update on him for this weekend. We should find out more in the coming days.
Fabian Schar’s availability is also a question mark after he left the Liverpool game with a calf injury. Like with Sean, we should find out more about Fabian’s injury early this week.
With a bit of luck, all three could be available for Brighton which would significantly increase Bruce’s options for the match.
