Superb Willems Strike Not Enough As Mane Has Reds Up 2-1 At The Half

It will be a daunting task for Newcastle to get anything from this game. However, it will not be impossible. The lads have been punished for a couple of lapses at the back. They have played well but Liverpool have proven too strong as they closed the half.

Newcastle were compact and organized against the league leaders to start the game. In the seventh minute, Jetro Willems launched a rocket into the top corner with his so-called weaker right foot. What a strike! It was a nice pass from Christian Atsu to find Willems on the left.

The lads looked very confident and composed in the first 20 minutes and handled everything Liverpool threw at them. Joelinton continued his superb hold-up play but it would begin to slip for the lads as Liverpool came alive.

They would start to apply the pressure after the 20 minute mark but there was still some excellent defending from the lads. The team kept their shape and made some crucial blocks and headed clearances. There was a penalty shout for Liverpool as Jamaal Lascelles pulled Joel Matip down in the box. It was not given by referee Andre Mariner.

That may have inspired Liverpool as Sadio Mane was able to even the score with a stellar strike into the top hand corner in the 28th minute. It was all Liverpool after that.

Klopp was forced into a change as Divock Origi made way for Firmino in the 36th minute. He would make an immediate impact for the Reds. Atsu was easily dispossessed in midfield and Firmino put the ball through to Mane. It was poor from Martin Dubravka as he was unable to claim the ball which Mane found for an easy tap in.

We’ll see if Bruce has any answers to stem this Liverpool attack in the second half. He’ll have to try to get Joelinton and Almiron more involved for any chance of a result today.
