Former Nottingham Forest and Southampton midfielder David Prutton is now a pundit for Sky Sports. Prutton specializes in the Championship and had something to say about Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle in Football League World recently.
Prutton was following up on comments West Brom manager Slaven Bilic had made about wanting to add a striker in January. This is what Bilic said a few days ago:
“It would be brilliant for me to have another striker, but then again you can’t have them focused [if there are too many].
“We are okay. Now, for this moment we are having a few players who can’t make the squad. With the new signings, I’m telling the agents and the people who are calling, I’m saying ‘listen: give us the player, so we can check him’.
“If there was a one-off situation, if it’s a young player and we can use him, then okay – we’d consider it, but basically we are okay until January.”
David Prutton reckons that if Dwight Gayle moves to West Brom this January, it could pay similar dividends to when Aleksandar Mitrovic moved to Fulham in the January 2018. Mitrovic was able to score 12 goals in his 17 appearances for Fulham and helped propel them into the Championship playoffs where they were eventually able to gain promotion.
This is what David how Prutton described a similar situation if Gayle were to move to West Brom this January:
“It would be fantastic – especially with the nature of the team they’ve got, and how he’s put it together. Romaine Sawyers has come in and taken like a duck to water, and he’s one of several key players that they have got.
“Dwight deserves a run of games, as it doesn’t help him at all when he’s coming off the bench to play only small parts of games. I think he’d be a great addition. The timing of the signing could be absolutely perfect – we saw Aleksandar Mitrovic sign for Fulham in 2018 at a similar time, and that was a massive statement.”
Dwight Gayle is a proven Championship goalscorer having bagged 23 goals in each of his last two seasons there. Last season while on loan at West Brom it was 23 goals in 39 appearances. Similarly, in Newcastle promotion campaign in 2016-17, Dwight was able to score 23 in just 32 games.
That is where the issue lies with Dwight. He broke down in our promotion season and ended up missing 10 games in the second half of the campaign. He is currently sidelined with a mysterious calf injury that just won’t respond to treatment. He has been totally shut down as a result of it.
We hope that Dwight can get fit and get a run of games before January as that would give Newcastle some cover at striker. It also could help get Dwight a move this winter if an opportunity comes along. Though we would prefer it to be a permanent one, as with only two years left on his deal, a loan move won’t really benefit Newcastle.
Fourth-placed West Brom will travel to face sixth-placed Fulham tomorrow. Aleksandar Mitrovic has done well for Fulham this season as well scoring 5 goals in his 6 appearances.
