Newcastle player with just one senior appearance could be offered contract extension – Report

Young Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff could be in line for a new contract with the club, according to the Shields Gazette.

The newspaper claims that the 19-year-old could join his big brother Sean in being offered fresh terms by their boyhood club.

The ginger-haired midfielder made his debut for the Magpies earlier this season against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, following his integration into the first team squad this summer.

The club’s managing director Lee Charnley is currently said to be handling contract negotiations with a number of Steve Bruce’s first team stars.

OPINION

This is terrific news and is well deserved for the younger Longstaff. He is not as well known as his brother, as far along in his development or – possibly – quite as good. However, that doesn’t mean that he can’t be a fine first team player for Newcastle at some point in his career. Sean is simply one of the finest prospects in the country, so there’s no shame in not quite being at his level. Having said that, we don’t yet know how good Matty is going to be. He came in against Leicester and did pretty well, while he impressed in a number of games over the course of pre season. He’s someone with big potential in his own right, and he’s obviously only going to get better. With that said, it makes all the sense in the world to tie him down to fresh terms as a reward for the progress he has made from the reserves through to being a member of the first team squad.
