‘Useless’ – Agent of loaned-out Newcastle player opens up on client’s Toon future

The agent of Achraf Lazaar has spoken out over his client’s future at Newcastle United.

The Moroccan international is currently on loan at Italian Serie B side, and his representative, Roberto De Fanti, has given a vague update on how his future with his parent club is shaping up.

Speaking to Tutto Mercato Web, he said: “It is useless to look at the past. Making a conspiracy is easy, but let’s look ahead.

“We still have a contract year at Newcastle, it expires in 2021.

“At the end of the season we will sit down with them and decide what to do: in this moment in his and our thoughts there is only being a protagonist in Cosenza.”

OPINION

It is probably fair to assume that Lazaar’s time in the north east is pretty much done. The defender has never really made much of an impression on Tyneside, and amassed just 10 appearances during his time at St. James’ Park. It was no real surprise when he was shipped out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday last season, but even then, he struggled to have any meaningful impact. To his credit, when he did feature for the Owls, he did well, averaging 1.8 tackles, 4.3 interceptions, and two clearances per game, as per Whoscored, but he only managed four appearances, and it is telling that Steve Bruce, who was at the helm at Hillsborough last term, saw fit to let him leave on loan. It is hard to see any way in which he can fight his way back into contention for Newcastle, and it is almost certain that he will leave permanently sooner rather than later.
