Longstaff Admits To Distractions With Manchester United Unlikely To Make January Approach

During Sean Longstaff’s interview yesterday with NUFC TV the subject of links to Manchester United was brought up. The Red Devils were said to be highly interested in the 21-year-old midfielder however were put off by Newcastle’s £50m valuation of Sean.

Sean spoke about the interest in him this summer and made an admission that he did get distracted by it. This is what he said:

“You can sometimes get distracted by the outside noise and maybe for a little bit in the summer I was a bit. It’s hard not to.

“Whenever you go anywhere, you see your face on the front of a newspaper, and you turn the telly on, people are talking about you. And it’s not like they’re talking about little things, they’re talking about things that can change your life really.

“The expectation is half what I’ve done, and it’s probably a good thing. It does just go to show I did impress people when I got my chance last year.

“So for me, it’s about not listening to them and sticking to what I do. I speak to Matty Ritchie a lot, he’s someone I lean on in the squad. He tends to keep us grounded, and he’s always there with good bits of advice.”

It’s not surprising that Sean was somewhat distracted after his sudden rise to prominence this past season. This summer was a far cry from the previous summer when he was likely preparing a loan move to a lower division club.

Sean has handled it maturely, and it’s good that he is getting sound advice from some senior members of the team. With Sean still showing signs that he is not fully back to his best yet, we hope that Manchester United don’t come sniffing around in the winter.

There is a report in Manchester Evening News which says Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to add a midfielder this past summer but missed out. However, the report states that he is hoping to land one during the January transfer window.

Recently Solskjaer and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward met to discuss transfer targets. The report reveals that the club retain a big interest in West Ham’s Declan Rice and have other targets on their radar as well. It also mentions that they are unlikely to pursue Sean Longstaff this winter which sounds good to us.
