Opinion: Young winger could be a great signing for the Toon

A report emerged yesterday that claimed Newcastle United intended to bring Jarrod Bowen to the club in January.

The 22-year-old winger scored 22 goals for Hull City last year and has started this season well with four goals in seven games.

Bowen was brought to Hull City by Steve Bruce, and if Newcastle could bring him to Tyneside, they would be getting a player who could excite their fans.

At the moment Newcastle’s frontline or preferred front three consists of Miguel Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximin and Joelinton.

Almiron has not provided a goal or an assist for his side yet – though he has brought a lot of qualities to the Newcastle frontline.

Saint-Maximin is currently injured, but a record of 12 goals and 17 assists in 111 Ligue 1 games suggests that he could also lack end product – though he is clearly a very gifted player.

Joelinton was brought into the club for £40m and has one goal in four games but looks to be adapting to the Premier League and has all the attributes to become a big success.

Although it is early days, this forward line possesses great pace and skill, but perhaps a lack of killer instinct, and that is why Bowen could be such a good signing.

In 94 Championship games he has scored 39 goals – which for a winger is ridiculously impressive.

Yes, it can be argued that he is playing in an inferior league and may not be able to make the jump up.

However, he is young and has progressed through from non-league – so if given a chance in the Premier League do not be surprised if Bowen impresses.

Certainly, his goalscoring record should speak for itself, and if Newcastle were to sign him then, he could provide a real goal threat from the wing.
