Steve Bruce had some encouraging news on Matt Ritchie after training today. It looks like his recovery from his ankle injury suffered against Leicester City two weeks ago is progressing better than initially expected.
Though, since it’s Matt Ritchie we are talking about that shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise.
The Chronicle have published an injury update from Steve Bruce on the man who has just turned thirty today.

This is what Steve Bruce has said about Ritchie after training:
“Matt Ritchie being Matt Ritchie is surprising us all. When I looked over today, he was running. He’s back on the training ground running in straight lines.
“I think that’s better news. With Matt, the good thing is it’s an impact injury. If there’s anything that an injury picks up on is impact. We know what it is.
“If it’s muscles, it’s always a bit of a problem and ligaments and things like that, but he’s out on the grass and the progress he’s made in two weeks is quite remarkable. I think it could be good news for all of us.
“He doesn’t look as if he’ll be eight weeks I wouldn’t think. The way he is at the minute – we don’t put timescales on these things – but closer to four or five weeks might be better.”
This is some more great news on the injury front for Newcastle. Earlier it was reported that Andy Carroll trained with the team for the first time on Tuesday.
Getting Matt Ritchie back ahead of the original eight-week projection will be a nice lift for Steve Bruce. Though we shouldn’t be too surprised as it is Matt Ritchie after all. He will have seen the performance Jetro Willems put in against Watford and will want to get back as soon as possible.
The next international break comes after the Manchester United match at St James Park on October 6th. So a possible return date for Matt could be the next fixture at Chelsea on October 19th.
Though knowing Matt Ritchie, we wouldn’t be surprised in the least if he was ready much sooner than that. Something tells us he may have the Leicester City match on September 28th circled on his calendar.
