Make no mistake about it, this is a disappointing result for the lads this afternoon. While the performance was decent, a draw against this Watford side seems like two points lost. Watford were there for the taking. A poor performance in the final third has cost Newcastle two points, and a very high place in the league for the international break.
Joelinton did very well in build-up play but had far too few chances. Miguel Almiron has had another poor display in front of goal. While he played very well making some good runs, his finishing has been disappointing.
There were some good performances individually as Christian Atsu and Jetro Willems were excellent today. After a shaky start at the back, the defenders ended up playing decently. Martin Dubravka also made a few good saves after a first half where he didn’t have much to do.
Watford did fashion a few chances late, and arguments could be made that a draw is a fair result. However, this was at home against a struggling side, and Newcastle just didn’t put it all together this afternoon. They showed glimpses but lacked that little bit extra this afternoon.
However, they have risen up the table out of the relegation zone as they enter the break. The next match is away at Anfield, and we’ll need to see a performance like the one at Spurs against Liverpool.
