Both side came out unchanged after a 1-1 first half. Newcastle were on the front foot from the start but still suffered from the sloppiness displayed throughout the first half.
They would get better and fashion a couple of back to back chances after the ten minute mark as they started to take control.
Fabian Schar had a golden chance from an excellent Sean Longstaff free kick but he couldn’t get enough on his header as it dribbled wide of the far post.
Jamaal Lascelles had a long jaunt down the left before freeing Christian Atsu. Atsu then pulled the ball back to Almiron whose shot was well deflected by Watford’s Christian Kabasele.
After Watford had a decent opportunity that Dubravka was able to save, Newcastle would fashion a beautiful move. Joelinton would find Atsu who freed Willems down the right but his cross could find no takers in the box.
Watford would make a double switch in the 71st minute as Doucoure and Hughes made way for Isaac Success and Nathaniel Chalobah.
Emil Krafth would come off for Javier Manquillo in the 77th minute. This was a good move by Bruce as Krafth was having some issues going forward, With Isaac Success looking dangerous since coming on for Watford, we needed some fresh legs down the right.
Fabian Schar– first-half strike to claim point
Watford would get another decent half chance right after the change as Isaac Success headed a nice delivery from Tom Cleverly. Dubravka was able to stretch and tip the ball away.
Newcastle would make another switch with Yoshinori Muto coming on for Christian Atsu. Watford also brought Gerard Deulofeu on for Andre Gray.
It was one of those games as the ball just wasn’t going to go in. After a goal line scrum, the ball unluckily bounced into the hands of Ben Foster after both Lascelles and Muto were there with chances. Muto was also clear through on goal but was forced wide where his shot could only find the side netting.
Fabian Schar was replaced by Federico Fernandez late in the game as the injuries mount for Newcastle. It doesn’t look too serious though for Schar.
This is a disappointing result for Newcastle. They lacked cutting edge in the final third that could have secured a victory. They will find few opportunities this ripe for three points the rest of season.
The result sees Newcastle move out of the relegation zone into 14th position but it was two points lost today. A decent performance but one that just needed a little more from the lads to be considered good enough.
