Paul Dummett has taken to Twitter to clarify that his comments about the warm-up at Norwich were not directed at Newcastle United’s coaching staff.
After the game, as quoted by the Chronicle, Dummett admitted that he noticed something “wasn’t right” in the Magpies’ preparations at Carrow Road on Saturday.
Newcastle went on to lose 3-1 to the newly-promoted side after an abject performance by almost every single player on the pitch.
Dummett has since taken to his personal Twitter account to clear up what he actually meant by those comments and claims that it was entirely about him and his team-mates, not the coaches.
“Just to clarify my comment on the warm up in my post match interview, it was about us as players and as a team, not the coaching staff. As I said in the interview, we know it wasn’t good enough from the first whistle. We need to stick together and improve – and we will,” the defender said.

No one had seemed to make a massive issue out of Dummett’s comments but it looks as though he may have been told to put this message on social media to stop any potential outrage that could be aimed at Steve Bruce and his coaching staff. Newcastle’s chiefs need to understand that the fans don’t hate Bruce – they hate why they have him. Rafa Benitez should still be Newcastle manager but instead, Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley failed to give him what he needed to make the club a success and ended up going bargain-basement shopping for his replacement. Bruce may be a Geordie and a boyhood Newcastle fan but he won’t be someone who the Toon Army takes to this season, or any point in the future unless he does something remarkable to prove them wrong. Some fans will look into things a bit too deep to try and make Bruce sound bad, but only Dummett really knows what he originally meant by his comments.
