Newcastle take a 1-0 lead into the half on a 38th-minute goal by Joelinton. The game got off to a sluggish start compared to the mid-week clash at Hibernian.
The lads, however, really grew into the game and had a few good chances to close the half.
Saint-Etienne look a very good side with talented players and played very well. The difference in the French club and Hibs was very noticeable.
Newcastle looked a threat at times and they used their pace to excellent effect however, they need to show a bit more patience at times.
Joelinton made it 2 goals in 2 starts when he was released on a beautiful pass by Fabian Schar.
Golaço de Joelinton!

Jonjo Shelvey also hit the bar from a free-kick just outside the box and it looked the ball was going to cross the line off the ricochet but remained just out.

The two new lads Jetro Willems and Allan Saint-Maximin got a warm welcome when they warmed up and we hope to see them in the second half.
