Newcastle Return To Long Contracts And Paying Fees Upfront

The Chronicle published an article this morning about the change in the transfer policy this summer back to the one the club adhered to in the past.

The club is returning to the policy of signing players to long contracts while paying the entire fee upfront. There had been speculation that the Joelinton fee would be paid in installments however, the Chronicle says that both the Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin fees have been paid in full.

Both players have also been signed on 6-year deals. This is a return to a policy that the hierarchy feels represents the best value and shows a commitment to the club.

Steve Bruce with Joelinton– big opportunity for both this season

This policy works very well when the players turn out to be quality first-teamers but has had mixed results at times. We can look at two transfers in January of 2016 to see an example of the policy working and also not working.

That winter both Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet joined the club on five and a half year deals. Jonjo Shelvey has become a first-team regular and the contract has benefitted the club at least in terms of length.

However, for Henry Saivet the long contract has caused problems for the club as he has seen little first-team action and spent the majority of the past three years on loan. He still has two years remaining on his deal.

The Chronicle report that Rafa Benitez did not like this policy and under him we saw players join on shorter deals though many still did sign for at least five years.

One player that joined on only a three-year deal is Fabian Schar and after just one year the club now will need to work on a new contract for the star defender.

Both visions seem to have their positives and negatives. The key is getting the transfer target right at a high percentage.

We are thrilled with the two permanent signings this summer as well as the loan deal for Jetro Willems. Hopefully, these three players can settle in quickly and have bright futures with the club.

There will also have to be some outgoings as the squad is over the 25 player limit at the moment so we expect to seem some movement on that front over the next few days as well as hopefully a few more players in.
