Jonathan Afolabi is a U19 Irish international striker who is currently available as a free agent. The 19-year-old former Southampton youth product was released from the club this summer.
There is a report in Pundit Arena saying that Newcastle are one of a handful of English clubs that have shown interest in the striker.
Just this week, Newcastle announced the signings of free agents Kyle Scott and Jake Turner who have joined the Newcastle U23s. They could be looking at adding a third free agent in Afolabi to try and strengthen the quality of youngsters at the club.
Afolabi scored 9 goals for the Southampton U23s last season and can play as an out and out striker or as a left-winger. He recently enjoyed an outstanding U19 European Championships where he was one of three forwards selected in the team of the tournament.
Pundit Arena claim that Crystal Palace are currently leading the race for the player with both Reading and Birmingham City also very interested.
