Premier League Club Plotting Move For Newcastle Defender

Mike McGrath of the Sun is reporting that Crystal Place are plotting a move for Newcastle centre-back Ciaran Clark.

He says that manager Roy Hodgson sees Clark as the perfect option to provide cover in central defense. The article also states that a fee of £5m is being prepared for the 29-year-old.

Central defense is one area that Newcastle have a wealth of options in currently. Even with Florian Lejeune still recovering from his knee injury, it is unlikely that Ciaran Clark will see much action this season barring an injury to either Jamaal Lascelles or Fabian Schar.

It is likely that while Florian is out Clark is the fourth choice behind Federico Fernandez and the aforementioned Lascelles and Schar. There is also Paul Dummett who can cover in central defense as well.

However, Newcastle have used three at the back in two preseason games under Steve Bruce and for the second half of last season under Rafa Benitez.

If this formation is the one that Bruce plans on using going forward, he will need plenty of cover for the position.

Newcastle have also recently been linked with a couple of defenders in Burnley’s Ben Gibson and Preston’s Ben Davies. Earlier in the summer they were also linked with a move for Bristol City’s Adam Webster.

So if Ciaran Clark were to leave, Newcastle may be able to make a move for one of those three as cover and an injection of youth at the position.

Ciaran Clark only made 14 appearances last season for the club and none of those were after January. He has made a total of 72 appearances for the club since he joined from Aston Villa three summers ago.
