Since Steve Bruce moved into the Newcastle manager position (replacing the irreplaceable Rafa Benitez) less than two weeks ago, things have started to look up a bit.
Bruce’s excellent man-management has been on full display, and he seemed to immediately calm down some of our players who were getting itchy feet.
But it seems top players like Martin Dubravka, Fabian Schar, Sean Longstaff are now very happy to remain on Tyneside.
The only one of those three we still have doubts about is the goalkeeper.
If Dubravka leaves, we don’t have enough time to replace him with a top goalkeeper if Newcastle are daft enough to let him go.
Isaac Hayden – looks like he staying onboard – GREAT!
What we do know of Steve Bruce is that he is a down to earth and sensible manager.
And he knows he has to hold onto some of the top players Rafa brought in during his 27 months as Newcastle manager.
It seems the manager has persuaded Isaac Hayden to stay on and that’s a massive win for Newcastle.
Isaac had put in a transfer request last summer so he could be closer to his girlfriend and their baby daughter.
But it now seems now he is willing to stay on Tyneside.
We don’t know if there’s been any change in his personal circumstances – and we don’t need to know.
With the signing of free agents, Kyle Scott and Jake Turner just announced today, they look like two excellent young players brought in at a very good price.
But we need at least three more senior players brought in before the window slams shut on Thursday, August 8th.
We need a left-back, and hopefully, we can get in PSG left-back Stanley N’Soki.
Rafa was following him for a couple of years, and the player refused to join us last summer; he wanted to fight for his first-team place in Paris.
The good news is that he now seems very keen to join Newcastle.
We also need a good winger brought in with the favorite being 22-year-old Allan Saint-Maximin.
The lad seems to have enormous potential and Newcastle are still trying to reach a fee with Nice – his club.
The thing that worries us the most about the young Frenchman is he’s already fallen out with his current manager and is said to be selfish with the ball.
The last thing we need this summer is somebody who can adversely affect the team spirit, which has been fabulous for three years.
That’s a significant strength Newcastle have, and we somehow need to get united again behind Steve Bruce and his players.
We don’t want to be relegated this season – which today seems a distinct possibility.
And somehow we need to get rid of Mike Ashley as soon as possible.
We think there’s still a chance he could sell before the end of the year – whatever he says in public.
He’s no longer welcome at Newcastle and he should know that by now.
It’s likely that Allan Saint-Maximin will be signed so we hope he behaves himself if and when he does come on board at the club.
We also need a striker and perhaps a central midfield player.
We’ve been linked with Everton central midfielder James McCarthy who was a target of Rafa’s when we were in the Championship back in January of 2017.
At £5M – he would be a decent buy and would give some Premier League experience to the side.
But we do have Sean Longstaff, Ki Sung-Yeung, Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, and Jack Colback as central midfielders with Matty Longstaff looking very good in preseason.
We could even see Matty come through this season like his older brother Sean did last season.
That would be great – so we may not another central midfielder.
But we need strikers, and I’ll address that later today – it’s crucial we have players who can score goals in addition to new-boy Joelinton.
