In May there were reports out of France that Newcastle were in talks to sign young winger Mehdi Zerkane once his contract ran out with Monaco. He was said to be a youngster that Rafa Benitez had rated.
The trail went cold on the 20-year-old Frenchman after the initial reports and no other links were reported.
The free agent has just signed a 3-year deal with Bordeaux and will move into their reserves.

We are not sure if there was anything in this link or if it was no longer pursued after Rafa Benitez left.
Yesterday, Newcastle were said to have won the race for free agent goalkeeper Jake Turner so we hope to hear something on that this coming week.
We also have to wonder what is going on with ex-Chelsea midfielder Kyle Scott who was reported to be signing by this weekend. In fact, local reports had three in by this weekend but we still only have Joelinton to come in thus far.
Newcastle will need to get to work and get some deals over the line. Jake Turner and Kyle Scott would be some welcome additions for the reserves.
Hopefully, Stanley N’Soki and Allan Saint-Maximin will also be announced within the next week.
