There are no reports on whether the bid has been rejected as of yet. Though, we would expect Nice to reject the bid as they have thus far held firm on their price tag of €20m for the French forward.
Nice also added Saint-Maximin to their pre-season squad for tomorrow’s friendly at Cardiff. This could be seen as a bit of gamesmanship by the French club.
This is similar to a situation involving Gini Wijnaldum at Newcastle three years ago. Liverpool were in pursuit of the Dutchman but unwilling to pay the £25m fee. Newcastle had Wijnaldum in the squad for a friendly against Doncaster mid-week and brought him on for a few minutes towards the end of the game.
Liverpool ended up paying the entire fee a few days later. So we will see what happens with Allan Saint-Maximin but if Newcastle really want him, then they should just pay the €20m and be done with it. There’s no time to quibble this late in the game.
