Steve Bruce has confirmed that Newcastle United are interested in signing Nice winger Allan Saint-Maximin, according to Sky Sports.
The Magpies are understood to have had two bids turned down for the 22-year-old French youth international, who hit six goals in Ligue 1 last season, but remain keen.
The forward is believed to be available for around £20 million this summer.
It’s relatively unusual for a manager to come out an explicitly say that his side are interested in a player unless a deal is very much in the offing. Bruce must know that he has an awful lot at stake in his new role, and that he risks riling fans up by making hollow promises. Because of that, this latest report would seem to suggest good news for the Toon Army. United need attacking players, and at around £20 million, Saint-Maximin seems to be an affordable option. His goalscoring record leaves a fair bit to be desired, but he has shedloads of potential at 22 years old, and the stats how that he could be a real force for the Magpies. An average of 4.2 successful dribbles per match last term is seriously impressive, as is his 2.2 shots on goal and his 1.7 key passes [Whoscored]. In short, Saint-Maximin is a player who could provide some much needed sparkle on Tyneside, and here’s hoping that Bruce is able to follow through on his teasing comments.
