View: Newcastle 27y/o surely already blown his shot at redemption based on reported Bruce hunt

OPINION

Newcastle United defender Achraf Lazaar has surely already blown his shot at redemption based on the fact Steve Bruce is reportedly hunting for a new left-back.

The Daily Mirror previously reported that Newcastle needed to sign full-backs, a zippy winger and a midfield enforcer, with the Daily Star following up that report to claim that Bruce had personally already noticed the left-back position needed urgently addressing in the transfer market.

So surely that means Bruce has written off the prospect of using Lazaar, otherwise, he wouldn’t be overly worried about the position of left-back.

The 27-year-old previously arrived back at the Magpies in the summer, after a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday in the second half of his 2018/19 season, with a clean slate. (Source: The Chronicle)

Lazaar since returning has been given an opportunity to show what he has got during some pre-season friendlies, and it’s fair to say he has shown that he shouldn’t be near the first-team.

The left-back struggled so badly against Wolves that he had many Newcastle fans ripping him apart on social media, and when he entered the game against West Ham on Saturday, it was no coincidence that the Magpies’ performance dropped once he was on the pitch.

So when you consider his bad performances and the fact Bruce is already looking for a new left-back, it’s likely that Lazaar won’t be seen much in the upcoming season.

The left-back has previously struggled at St James Park under Rafa Benitez as despite signing for the club in 2016, he has only made 10 appearances, and when Benitez left and Bruce arrived, it clearly looked like he had a chance of redemption.

This is the case even though he averaged a terribly low rating of 6.11 when featuring for the Magpies in the Championship during the 2016/17 season. (Source: WhoScored)

Yet, unless Bruce fails to sign a new left-back, Lazaar has already blown his shot.
